[Shanghai] Piro
Piro | Dianping
Address: 常熟路89号(近巨鹿路) – 89 Changshu Rd near Julu Rd (静安区 Jing’an District)
Date visited: 2013.08 for brunch

Will return: No
Edit: this venue has closed. It is now Charlie’s Burger by the same owner.
This restaurant is very American. Verrrry American. Something you would see in a college town. In fact, this is a Penn State (and Yankees) restaurant bar. Enter at your own risk should either team be a rival to you. I went to a rival school. Biased? Of course. Go blue.
I miss college days but I don’t miss college food and this is exactly that. It’s food that you would eat while watching the game or morning after a rager at the frat house (those two are usually the same morning). This is the place to get it if you like that kind of thing but I come from a place where frat bros eat Zingerman’s so standards are a little different.
Interesting choice of menu words. Although that does sound good.
Carnitas Poutine (RMB¥65)
Recommend: yes
Pretty good. It was a huge portion (better be for 65 kuai) and my friend ate it as his main.
Grilled Cheese Breakfast (RMB¥45)
Recommend: no
Standard.
Chocolate Chip Pancakes (RMB55) + Add 2 Eggs and Bacon combo (RMB¥15)
Recommend: yes
The pancake circumference is very small but they give you five of them to compensate. The title is slightly deceiving as it is just chocolate sauce on the pancakes and not chocolate chips embedded in the pancakes. Not amazing but not bad either.
For an extra RMB¥15, you can get two eggs and two strips of bacon.
Meatball Sub (RMB¥55)
Recommend: no
The bread and sauce were fine but the meat didn’t taste fresh and the cheese was powdery and didn’t melt into the sandwich.
[…] Banana Walnut Pancakes (RMB¥50) Recommend: yes This was a special during this visit. Three giant walnut-embedded pancakes topped with caramelized banana and frosting cream. It’s no Clinton Street banana walnut pancakes in New York (nothing is) but the batter was decent and the caramelized banana was a pleasant surprise when I expected plain banana. I choose these pancakes over the ones at Piro. […]
Love the review – but most importantly the subtle shout-out to UM. I grew up in PA, PSU is not really a rival, more like our bitch.
