Happy 4th of July! And probably the only time we decide to be overly patriotic to our other homeland besides China. You know we are split between USA and China for the Olympic Games depending on the sport.
What did you do for 4th of July? I had five kind of steaks… in one day. One at Morton’s for lunch and four at Roosevelt Prime for dinner. Roosevelt Prime, my favorite steakhouse in Shanghai, ran a 4th of July special that offered 20% off all steaks (God bless you, Roosevelt management) so I made 8 people come with me to share a bunch of steaks. It’s hard being my friend, I know. The steaks range from RMB¥350 for a filet mignon to RMB¥1250 for a porterhouse. This place is Shanghai Girl approved for steaks.
Please also see my previous visit for more details.
Bread (Complimentary)
Amuse-bouche: Gazpacho (Complimentary)
9 people and 6 steaks. We doubled up on “The Delmonico” and “The Cowboy” (bottom two on the board), which were described by the staff as the most fatty cuts. You can definitely see the fat content difference.
Before cooking:
New York Strip Prime:
Bone-in Ribeye Prime:
T-Bone:
And after cooking:
Our six steaks in all their glory, being cut by our very nice server for the night. If you are not sharing, they will give you the steak whole to cut yourself, which is more ideal because the meat won’t cool as fast.
“The Delmonico” – Ribeye Prime 16oz/454g, 1.5″ thick (RMB¥650)
Medium rare–look at that blood seeping out. No sauce needed.
“The Cowboy” – 28 Days Aged Bone-in Ribeye Prime 24oz/680g, 2.0″ thick (RMB¥875)
21 Days Aged New York Strip Prime 14oz/397g, 1.5″ thick (RMB¥700)
T-Bone All Natural Angus CAB 20g/567g, 1.25″ thick (RMB¥525)
One difference we noticed was that both “The Delmonico” and “The Cowboy” had charcoaled crusts that made for a nice crispy outside while the T-bone and New York Strip Prime were not crusty but seemed slightly more tender. After tonight’s dinner, my pick is “The Cowboy” with “The Delmonico” following close behind. While the T-bone and New York Strip Prime were praiseworthy, I do prefer a steak with a crusty outside myself. All the steaks we had were great, just depends on your personal preference for cut.
We did not order any starters but got some sides to accompany our steaks. A round of daily seasonal vegetable medley (RMB¥65), Roosevelt’s famous black truffle mac & cheese (RMB¥80), and ‘Robuchon’ styled mash potatoes with crispy leeks (RMB¥65).
I asked if we should get two orders of the truffle mac & cheese and someone replied “three.” Done.
Creamy mash potatoes that had this one forking out the last of it.
Silken Cheesecake (RMB¥80) with Maple Blue Mountain Coffee Pot de Crème, Candied Lime Zest & Tuiles
Recommend: no
This is not a traditional cheesecake (and I wish it were) because it has super light and airy, almost mousse-like texture. When I am at a steakhouse, I like a heavy New York style cheesecake such as the one at 1515 West. The cheesecake tasted better after being dipped in the coffee.
Holy macaroni… that’s alot of good and well cooked steaks in one sitting!
I love a good crusty char on my steaks too.
Roosevelt is out of my price range unfortunately, maybe I’ll try The Cut sometime soon…
Yo Shanghai Kid…1515, Char and Morton’s all about same price as RPS! And I hear they will start doing a USDA Prime Bone-in Prime Rib Roast that will blow you away called ‘The Masterpiece’ starting July 21st. So order that 1000g for 2-3 persons at ¥1000 and the Mac cheese with a simple salad and your out if there at ¥400-500 per person! If you don’t like it…George the owner says it’s FREE!!!
