I haven’t have Japanese curry since I pigged out on 4 bowls of curry at the ANA lounge buffet where there is a huge vat for the taking at Haneda Airport a few months ago. I had so much curry that time I had to take a long breather until my next bowl.

Dr. Curry is opened by a Japanese man named Hiro-san, who also owns HTO, another curry shop on Shanxi Nan Lu that has been around for some time. Dr. Curry is a small shop with a couple of bar seats and a few small tables between the first and second floor. The menu is small but the curry is very good. For curry rice, you can choose between just curry sauce, fried pork cutlet, beef, or vegetables; a curry udon is also available.

Katsu curry rice (small RMB60 show below / large RMB80) + raw or cooked egg (RMB8)
Recommend: yes
The menu states “katsu” but more specifically this is a “tonkatsu” (“ton” = pork, “katsu” = fried cutlet). This might be the best bowl of tonkatsu curry rice I’ve had in Shanghai. The pork was tender with bits of fat around the edge; the curry was prolific and slightly peppery. Even the small rice portion (shown below) was huge for one person. Each order comes with Japanese red pickles on the side. I am definitely an advocate of adding a raw egg for extra RMB8.

You can’t go wrong here if you love a good curry and have standards because the curry chains will never taste the same again after this.
