It’s not a trip to Hong Kong without eating at a local HK style cafe (cha chaan teng in Cantonese) where you are crammed shoulder-to-shoulder with your neighbors sitting on small stools. Lan Fong Yuen is one of those spots and has been around since 1952. I’ll take these as signs of legitimacy.
There are three locations in Hong Kong and we went to the one in TST:
- 2 Gage Street, Central
中環結志街2號 - 3/F, Shun Tak Centre, 168-200 Connaugh Road, Central, Sheung Wan
上環干諾道中168-200號信德中心3樓 - Basement, WK Square, Chungking Mansions, 36-44 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui
尖沙咀彌敦道36-44號重慶大廈地庫WK廣場26號舖
The full menu is in traditional Chinese but there is a photo reference for signature dishes. I don’t know Cantonese so I tried ordering in Mandarin with the Auntie and it worked. Pointing to the photo menu always works if all else fails.
I zoomed in right away on the photo of chicken cutlet instant noodle with scallion 蔥油雞扒撈丁 (HKD51 lunch set with milk tea). This is my favorite dish in HK style cafes so if I see it on the menu, I have to get it. If you are looking for this dish in Shanghai, head on over to Cha’s.
