It has been three years since I first stepped into Beef & Liberty during one of my first days in Shanghai and it is still one of my favorite burger places. Many burger joints have opened (and closed) in the last three years but Beef & Liberty continues to be the one that subsequent burgers are benchmarked against. The menu and ingredients are periodically updated so I thought I would do a refresher on the current offerings.

Vanilla milkshake (RMB55) 
Recommend: yes
The milkshakes here are on the more liquid and less solid side, which I like; any more solid and it is ice cream. I was told Beef & Liberty recently changed its milk supply so the milkshakes taste even better than before (more 鲜). Spiked milkshakes are also available.

Mac & cheese bites (RMB48) macaroni, cheddar, parmesan
Recommend: yes
I love mac and cheese, especially in fried form. Each order comes with four pieces, which is four pieces too few because I can definitely eat more than this alone. Comes with a nutty pesto oil dip.

Moving onto burgers, Beef & Liberty’s patties are made from hormone-free and grass-fed beef from Tasmania. All burgers come with a side of fries.

Pictured below is a hybrid of two burgers on the menu — bacon cheeseburger with a black pepper patty instead of a regular patty because I do what I want. The black pepper burger (RMB95) uses a patty rubbed with crushed peppers, which I really like and have not seen in other burgers in Shanghai, along with cheddar, caramelized onion, and rocket.

Recommend: yes
A classic gourmet burger with all the condiments it should have; add ketchup as desired. Note that this burger has raw onion while other burgers use cooked/caramelized onion.

Chicken burger (RMB75) fried breaded hormone-free & antibiotic-free chicken breast, cabbage slaw, spinach, cajun mayo
Recommend: yes
Beef & Liberty also offers chicken, pork (RMB88), and falafel (RMB70) burgers as alternatives to beef. On the rare occasion I am able to forgo a beef burger, I order the chicken burger, which comes with two fried chicken patties. While I prefer dark meat over white meat, the cabbage slaw and cajun mayo more than help to flavor the burger.

All burgers come with a side of regular fries (the thick kind that I don’t like) so I usually swap for sweet potato fries (RMB20 to swap; RMB40 for side order).
