Boxing Cat is a popular brunch spot in Shanghai. It is a safe place to go for your standard western breakfast of eggs, sausages, pancakes, and the likes. While this is never my first choice (I like to go to places that serve some form of Eggs Benedict), it is an agreeable backup especially when half the table just walked straight out of the club. You know it’s going to be a classy morning. Er, yeah I’ll stop there.
Some sort of Indian Pale Ale (RMB¥50). Why why why are you guys drinking beer for breakfast.
Toast (Complimentary)
Breakfast Burrito (RMB¥75) with scrambled eggs, cheese, Andouille sausage, guacamole and chipotle aioli
Recommend: yes
Big, wet, and a little sloppy but then again, this is a classy bunch that drinks beer with brunch so etiquette shmetiquette.
Brunch items come with choice of coffee, tea, or juice.
Banana Walnut Pancakes (RMB¥50)
Recommend: yes
This was a special during this visit. Three giant walnut-embedded pancakes topped with caramelized banana and frosting cream. It’s no Clinton Street banana walnut pancakes in New York (nothing is) but the batter was decent and the caramelized banana was a pleasant surprise when I expected plain banana. I choose these pancakes over the ones at Piro.
BCB Brunch Plate (RMB¥68) with 2 eggs, cajun potatoes, house made fennel pork sausage, and bacon
Recommend: no
Fine but nothing too out of the ordinary.
Big Daddy’s Steak and Eggs (RMB¥108) with grilled filet mignon topped with BCB BBQ sauce, onion rings, and eggs
Recommend: yes
Two days in a row eating steak and eggs for brunch. The seasoning on the filet was very good. We asked for it to be medium rare but it was cooked a little too well. We could taste that it was a good steak in one small spot at the very center of the steak that was still left rare. Would have been excellent if not overcooked.
And appropriately, boxing cats.
