The House of Roosevelt at Bund 27 is top to bottom food and drink with the Sky Bar (9F), Sky Restaurant (8F), The Roosevelt Club (3F), and Wine Cellar Restaurant (2F). On this occasion, we enjoyed a late night dinner at the Sky Restaurant and afterparty at the Sky Bar to celebrate a trio of October birthdays. A well-planned and delightful food and drink event with friends. Happy birthday all!
For dinner, there was great food, service, and atmosphere with two long tables by the window overlooking the bund. Though we had quite a large dinner party, the servers were very attentive and prompt with wine refills, dish changes, and various requests. Please note that someone from the party knew the management so this experience may have been better than a normal dining experience, but the other tables near us looked like they were well taken care of throughout the night.
In terms of spending, it is your typical fine-dining-on-the-bund prices. We had a party of 20+ split between two long tables. I will let your imagination run wild with the bill.
The one general complaint was that the bass from the Sky Bar was thumping too loudly but granted we were also eating at 11pm so we had it coming.
Bund view.
To start, there were some neat cloth napkins folded in the shape of a suit jacket! Dapper.
Soft butter is always a good sign. There were delicious sweet rolls and garlic bread to spread the butter on.
By the way, the theme was The Godfather. We took it very seriously (props mind you).
Amuse-bouche: smoked salmon on bread and cucumber sushi roll
Trio of foie gras: foie gras mousse with red wine jelly, foie gras terrine with brioche, seared foie gras with strawberry foam (RMB¥118)
Recommend: yes
The foie gras terrine and seared foie gras were fatty and rich. We did not like the mousse, which tasted a bit sour and cheesy but the other two pieces were good enough to validate getting this dish.
Spanish iberico de bellota ham 36 months (RMB¥198)
Recommend: maybe
This was good but since you can get cold cut plates like this at other places, I don’t see this as a completely necessary order.
Fried foie gras with truffle risotto (RMB¥118)
Recommend: most definitely
My favorite dish of the night. The risotto was aromatic with truffle flavor. The foie gras was more chewy rather than fatty, which in this case was a good contrast in texture against the creaminess of the risotto (or else instant artery clog). Also, this is a really big portion; two people can definitely gorge on –I mean share– it. A couple of people at the table got this and it was a unanimous yes to this.
Roosevelt surf & turf: Canadian black cod with XO sauce tomato salsa, beef tenderloin with foie gras and duck fat fried hash brown (RMB¥338)
Recommend: yes
The cod was tender and the beef was cooked medium rare the way we like it. The duck fat hash brown was a delicious complement to the beef. I recommend this dish if you want some variety in your entree rather than one or the other. We were in the mood for both fish and beef.
Australian Wagyu Tomahawk: 1,500 g/53 oz, serves 3-4 people (RMB¥1,288)
Recommend: maybe
First of all, you need a few people to eat this. Between four people, you’re looking at about ~RMB¥300 a person to split a tomahawk. I feel like this is something you order to impress a client or date (assuming she eats) or if you are a bunch of bros having a manly meal. It is indeed a very impressive display of meat, which the server brings out for you to admire and carves up in front of you. For those purposes, I think it is perfect. However, if you are not doing any of the above, I think something like the surf & turf should suffice. I liked this to try once but I don’t need it next time.
Medium rare, of course.
After dinner, we headed upstairs to the afterparty and enjoyed more bund view from the Sky Bar. Please note that there is a minimum charge when booking this room at the Sky Bar.
Gents.
2/3 of the birthday trio.
Delicious chocolate mousse cake with macarons! Happy birthday!
