There is a new omakase sushi place in town and it is worth visiting. Hulu Sushi is opened by Chef Liu-san, who had worked at Sushi Oyama (my favorite sushi place in Shanghai) for years as his sous chef. A lot of the stuff here reflects Liu-san’s time working with Oyama-san — though it is not Oyama (no one is Oyama let’s get that straight), it is the best bang for buck for sushi in this price range, which is pretty much nonexistent for omakase these days in Shanghai. Yes, there are better sushi places for RMB1400-1500 (Sushi Oyama, Sushi Naoki), but this place for RMB680 is worth it. There are only 6 bar seats and 2 seatings each night Monday-Saturday 18:00-20:15 & 20:30-23:00.
Always start with a few pieces of sashimi and then dive into sushi.
Scallop with ebi and uni
Torched toro with uni and minced toro
I don’t like the cooked side dishes here (usually cooked fish and chawanmushi), which are not the most memorable. Oh well.
Foie gras and ikura rice bowl (a very Oyama dish)
Dessert is panna cotta with salted caramel directly out of Oyama’s book
