[Shanghai] Kappo Yu 割烹遊
Kappo Yu 割烹遊 | Dianping
Address: 吴兴路33号(近淮海中路) – 33 Wuxing Lu near Huaihai Zhong Lu (徐汇区 Xuhui District)
Date visited: 2014.07
Price: RMB¥690 set per person + extra for drinks
Will return: Maybe
Kappo Yu is Sushi Oyama’s sister restaurant serving kaiseki dinners. The omakase set at Kappo Yu is RMB¥690 per person, which serves a mix of cooked and raw dishes over approximately 10 courses. In contrast, Sushi Oyama focuses more on sushi.
Having heard so much about Kappo Yu from friends, I had high expectations. The set was good with distinctly tasty courses but also a few not so memorable courses. It was not bad by any means but frankly, I expected more. Perhaps another try when the menu changes (which is monthly).
Please note this is the July 2014 menu and subsequent menus will vary month to month.
Menu is available in English for the 中文-impaired.
Drink menus in scrolls.
Masumi Nagano Sake (RMB¥330 for 300ml)
Texture on the tongue: squid, watershield, yam, ginger soy
Like a shooter with a sharp kick from the squid and cold broth mix.
Lingering flavor of pike conger: pike conger, Japanese pepper-miso, eggplant
Sweet miso eel on a personal grill.
Raindrops falling on the sea: toro, Northern shrimp, 2 seasonal picks sashimi
Cloud of corn: corn, soy milk, sea urchin
Definitely the most memorable highlight of the meal–creamy foam engulfing sweet uni. The foam really brought out the uni flavor.
Aromatic moment: chicken grunt (seabass), shiso leaf, tomatoes, pickled plum
I did not like this at all and was really confused by the taste of the vegetables, which were sour.
Breeze from South Asia: trio of surf clam, coconut & grapefruit, lemongrass tempura
A pleasant trio of crispy tempura.
Iberian pork bomb: Iberian pork, shiitake mushroom, cabbage, seaweed, bonito powder
Ground pork wrapped in cabbage in a savory pork broth bordering average.
Teppanyaki main dish (choice of wagyu beef wrap, wagyu beef steak, or lobster which we didn’t order):
Beef and horizon: wagyu beef, sea salt, wasabi sauce
While very thin, the beef held more fat than it looked.
Beef steak: wagyu beef with onion sauce (additional +RMB80)
Super fatty melt-in-your-mouth beef but perhaps needed a dash of salt.
Minced toro rolls
After burst open: hand roll (choice of salmon roe, mackerel, tempura clam)
At the end of the meal, hand rolls were served with a choice of various fillings. The mackerel was a surprise favorite.
Mackerel hand roll
Tempura clam hand roll
Salmon roe hand roll
Sweet memories: peach sorbet and mocha with mango, jelly, and red bean.
For dessert. the peach sorbet was excellent especially with a touch of fresh peach and mint. However, I am never a big fan of mocha and jelly so I was not keen on the other bowl.
