[Shanghai] Madison
Madison | Dianping
Address: 汾阳路3号2号楼1楼(近淮海中路) – 1/F Bldg 2, 3 Fenyang Rd near Huaihai Middle Rd (徐汇区 Xuhui District)
Date visited: 2013.05
Total bill: RMB¥187 for two people
Will return: Definitely
This is one of the most legit brunch menus I have seen in Shanghai and the rest of the world. I wanted everything on this menu. The food here tasted luxurious yet comfortable at the same time. It felt like I was back in New York getting brunch on the weekend. Living the New York life in Shanghai–I couldn’t ask for anything more. Coincidentally, the name Madison was inspired by chef Austin Hu’s hometown in Wisconsin and previous cooking life in New York.
We arrived at 11am when brunch started. Even though only a few tables were initially filled, most of the tables were reserved and the place filled up quickly around noon. Do make a reservation in advance for brunch on the weekend.
Carrot Orange Juice (RMB$40) and Latte (RMB¥35)
Stole a sip of the carrot OJ, which was sweet and surprisingly very good. I will be ordering it next time.
Scotch Duck Eggs (RMB¥44) with wholegrain mustard, arugula
Recommend: yes
The meat and breadcrumbs on the outside were really really tasty. It was good with the mustard and good without the mustard. The eggs should have been slightly runny but it was fine. You can’t go wrong with this.
Griddled Shrimp (RMB¥68) with eggplant caponata, polenta, tomato butter
Recommend: yes
There are rare occurrences when I like shrimp and this was one of them. The polenta was very rich and creamy and the puffs on the top gave the dish a nice crunch.
I love Madison!!
Wasn’t impressed with this place! my stomach wouldn’t let me finish the country fried steak because it was too greasy/heavy, and the cheese and gravy sauces with the disco fries were very bland. friends I dined with complained that their portions were too small, will not be returning
Aw I’m sorry to hear that! That’s definitely happened to me before where my friends rave about restaurants and when I go, it doesn’t quite match my expectations whether it’s because the kitchen had an off day or just differing personal taste. Hope you found another brunch place that suits your taste better!
[…] I like my local Chinese food but when I need my American brunch fix, I go to Madison (also see previous post). […]
