One of my friends loves this place for its all-you-can-eat dim sum special so of course I got dragged here for Saturday brunch. Marriott Shanghai Centre is located in People’s Square, which I try to avoid like I avoid Times Square in New York. Too many tourists and too much foot traffic. I just can’t.
The dim sum menu varies slightly from time to time due to available ingredients but of course you always have your basics like shu mai, char siu bao, and har gow. For RMB¥108 per person, you can order as much as you like, as many times as you like. What you see below (and note there were repeats) was consumed by only three girls. All-you-can-eat… what a terrible idea for a productive Saturday. We sat around in food coma for awhile afterwards.
As far as taste goes, it is okay. It is essentially a buffet that you order and I never expect buffets to be exceptional. This place is really for those looking for quantity, not quality. I prefer the dim sum at Shanghai Tang Cafe 上海滩 in Xintiandi and Gui Hua Lou 桂花楼 at the Pudong Shangri-La (which would probably have come out to be around the same price a la carte if we hadn’t ordered the most expensive orange juice on earth). I am sure none of these places can compare to Hong Kong so this will not fill that void.
There is also a self-serve station that has DIY congee, “pho” (in quotes because I use the term pho loosely), vegetables, fruits, and various other dishes.
Undercooked and very oily fried dough (“youtiao”). Much prefer the ones in the small shops on the street.
Steamed pork rib
Steamed pork & shrimp dumplings with crab roe
Steamed shrimp dumpling
Steamed seaweed & shrimp dumpling
Steamed shrimp & cod dumpling
Steamed pork tripe with chili sauce
DIY congee
Steamed chicken feet with XO sauce
Pig’s ears
Pan fried leek dumpling
DIY pho
Steamed glutinous rice with egg yolk wrapped in lotus leaf
Crispy durian puff pastry
Steamed sweet taro bun
This supposedly taro purple sauce makes me cringe a little.
Well, we ate our dessert (durian puff pastry and taro bun) and then we ordered more food.
Deep fried glutinous rice dumpling minced pork with dried shrimps
Steamed BBQ pork bun
Deep fried fruit with mayonaise roll
Ending with some fresh fruit. I think this was my favorite part…
