Total bill: RMB¥397 for three people
Will return: Definitely
What to get:
– Churros
– Pan de Maiz Huevos Benedictos
– Slow-Roasted Pork Belly Taco
Maya is another excellent brunch place in Shanghai that has good atmosphere, food, and service. We were really tempted by the bottomless sangria (RMB¥125 per person) but the guys had to play golf after brunch and reluctantly refrained. I’ll be back for you, bottomless sangria.
Smoothie – Banana, Papaya (RMB¥35)
Churros (RMB¥50) with chocolate, whipped cream & strawberry salsas
Recommend: yes
Each piece was pretty thick. Crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Good starter for sharing.
Pan de Maiz Huevos Benedictos (RMB¥55) with poached runny eggs over chorizo, corn muffin & red pepper hollandaise
Recommend: yes
This was like a Mexican twist on eggs benedict and it was hella bomb. This combination of elements tasted really good together in one bite–salty with a hint of sweetness from the corn muffin. The corn muffin sealed the deal. Must get this.
Maya House-Smoked Salmon (RMB¥58) with grilled asparagus, poached egg, apple chipotle hash, red pepper hollandaise & chive sour cream
Recommend: maybe
This portion was pretty tiny and my friend was definitely not full from this so we ended up ordering a couple more tacos.
Blackend Fish Taco (RMB¥27)
Recommend: no
I have had some good fish tacos and this was not one of them. It was not bad but it was nowhere near what a fish taco should be. Some slaw instead of lettuce would have been better.
Blackened Fish Taco (L) and Slow-Roasted Pork Belly Taco (R)
Slow-Roasted Pork Belly Taco (RMB¥27)
Recommend: yes
This was really good. I think there were some mangos in this, which contrasted and brought out the flavor of the pork well. Everyone liked this.
Lime Beef Taco (RMB¥28)
Recommend: definitely no
Not good. The flavor of the meat was off.
[…] me, Mexican food is an idea I get… never (unless it is brunch at Maya, which I do enjoy very much). Those nights after Rick’s in college (Ann Arbor equivalent of […]
[…] Poached eggs, English muffin, hollandaise with spinach (RMB¥78) with bacon (RMB¥85) with smoked salmon (RMB¥85) with the lot – bacon, smoked salmon, spinach (RMB¥128) Recommend: the lot! When I asked my friend to pick a place, I told her I wanted some form of eggs benedict because that is my definition of brunch. The eggs benedict at Henkes are simply called poached eggs with English muffin and hollandaise with a choice of spinach, bacon, and smoked salmon. I was debating between the bacon and the smoked salmon and my friend said she had the same dilemma last time and chose all three. I did exactly that and it was the best answer ever. Perfectly poached eggs piled with a mountain of bacon, smoked salmon, and spinach, topped off with sour hollandaise sauce. This is now one of my favorite eggs benedicts in Shanghai (other good eggs benedicts also at Cuivre, Madison, and Maya). […]
