Summer is here and patio days are in full swing. To take full advantage of its outdoor courtyard space in Zhang Yuan, Starling has started serving brunch on Sundays with a RMB128 set menu for 1 starter, 1 main, 1 dessert, and 1 standard drink. Aside from Sunday brunch, Starling operates primarily as a bar with a selection of Malaysian specialties like satay, curry, and laksa. Something different from the usual eggs and bacon, dim sum, or in my case Nosh bagel delivery brunch. Quite nice.
Please note brunch is served Sundays only! (Because I definitely tried to make a reservation for Saturday once and it did not work.)
Mango bellini (+RMB45 extra)
Fresh mango juice mixed with sparkling wine is even better than a regular bellini.
Starters: choice of Thai beef salad, vermicelli salad, or Asian platter (+RMB20 extra).
I like the vermicelli salad and Asian platter, which has single-person portions of chicken satay, Thai fish cake, and Vietnamese spring roll.
Mains: choice of Indian vegetable curry, Malay curry chicken with roti prata, beef rending (+RMB15 extra), baby squid and prawn curry (+RMB20 extra), or Starling signature laksa (+RMB20 extra).
Starling’s laksa (+RMB20 extra) is the laksa that got me into laksas. That is all I need to say.
Beef rending (+RMB15 extra) with sprinkles of coconut flakes, served with fragrant rice.
Malay curry chicken with roti prata
Indian vegetable curry option is so considerate for rabbit food eaters.
Baby squid and prawn curry (+RMB20 extra) was ironically my favorite curry base of all the curries given that I am not a huge cooked shrimp or prawn fan. Now if only I can have this curry base with something else in it would be perfect.
Dessert: choice of two scoops of ice cream of the week, sago gula melaka with coconut milk & mango, coconut cake with fresh mango (+RMB20 extra).
Sago gula melaka is sago pudding with palm sugar syrup. Mix in all the coconut milk and it is
Coconut cake with fresh mango (+RMB20 extra) is my favorite dessert here and it comes with coconut ice cream so essentially two desserts in one.
